Goals

Why is the project needed?
The most serious threats for European bison what is the low size of global population, isolation between herds and decreasing the risk of genetic variability loses. Creation of the metapopulation in North-East Poland will rebuilt the possibility of natural gene flow and increase population size. It is important to notice that E. bison is umbrella species and affects positively the biodiversity of the open areas.
What is the objective of the project?
The main aim of the Project is to continue proper management of existing populations and preparing other regions for new populations.
What is the project expected to achieve?
The expected results of the project will be properly managed and monitored existing populations, created new herd in Żednia Forestry, prepared site for reintroduction in Augustowska Forest and evaluated possibility of reintroduction in Romincka Forest. The other effects will be promotion and increase of acceptance.
How will the project address these challenges?
The project is one of many steps to create metapopulation. The new herd in Żednia will make a link between Knyszyńska and Białowieska populations. The Augustowska will connect both Borecka and Knyszyńska herds. Many workshops and conference will help to gain the acceptance of local communities.
Who is expected to benefit?
The target group is endangered species Bison bonasus as well as the local communities and institutions connected with nature protection.
